Big secret project

17 Mar

I’ve been working on my Big Secret Project for a few weeks, on and off. Obviously it’s going to become obvious what this might be but I’m not saying who it’s for!

I started by buying my fabric from here and here. I then washed (by colour), dried and ironed it all. I decided to go with 5 inch blocks which were easy to measure and cut due to the size of my quilting/sewing ruler. I cut 168 blocks so I would have a 14 square x 12 square layout. There are 20 different fabrics, each featuring anywhere between 7-15 times, depending on how many squares I cut from a piece.

After cutting out all the squares, I lay them out on the floor and spent a couple of hours trying to best arrange them.

I then piled each row up and labeled them 1-14. VERY important step! (However, taking a photo is also an important step in case those labels fall off!)

Next step was to sew each row together. I used a 1/4 inch seam allowance and ironed my seams open after sewing the row together. I then sewed 2 rows together, ironed the seams open, and labeled them. I found it useful to hang the completed rows on a drying rack whilst I worked on the others.

I then sewed sets of double rows together (again, being careful to keep them in the right order) until I had 3 blocks of 4. Then I put these final blocks together to create one entire piece. I found it easier and more accurate to sew the pieces together in blocks, rather than just adding row by row down the line (does that make sense?).

Next step is to buy some wadding and backing fabric when I visit Spotlight in Tamworth in a fortnight. Then comes the tricky part of quilting it together. I don’t intend to do anything super-complicated (I’m certainly not brave enough to try this) but will probably stick to something similar to this or this. I also intend to do a small feature on the back, similar to what Ashley does with many of her quilts at FITF.

Stay tuned!

Newcastle

10 Mar

We had to go to Newcastle for my exams so we decided to make the best of a not-so-great situation and stayed at the Crowne Plaza. It was nice! They even threw in a bottle of champagne after I’d told them it was our wedding anniversary.
